The History of Pole Dancing
Modern Pole Dancing can trace its roots back over 800 years to the traditional Indian sport called Mallakhamb. The earliest recorded references to Mallakhamb is found in the 12th century classic Manasollasa (1135 AD) by Somesvara Chalukya.
It was also practiced in ancient Hyderabad. Though the sport does not become visible in practice and significantly recorded until it was reinvented in the 18th century by Balambhatdada Deodhar, the fitness instructor of Peshwa Baji Rao II during the reign of the Peshwas.
The Chinese pole in early history, originated fron India and from which two poles would be used upon which men would perform “aerial tricks” as they jumped from pole to pole, at twenty feet in the air.
In the roaring 1920′s, traveling carnival sideshows would utilize pole dancing as part of their act and in time the art pole dancing moved from their tents to saloons & bars, combining with the sexy burlesque dancing of the period.
Since the 1980s, the dance pole has increasingly been incorporated into striptease, Go-Go or lap dancing. In the 1990′s, pole dancing began to be utilized in fitness exercises and routines and have become a popular form of recreational and competitive sport.
Today, numerous competitions exist, including the World Pole Sport Championship, U.S. Pole Federation Championship, and the International Pole Masters Cup Championship.
